Fly Rod Length
This video is all about selecting the right fly rod length for the application. Something to consider with rods is the Longer they are, the more leverage the Line creates at the pivot point (your wrist) - making them more fatiguing to cast. The length of the rod has some implication as to the amount of line that can be carried when false casting, but because most streamer lines are condensed to conserve mass (30ft heads), short rods are very effective at handling and managing the line. Very Short Rods (7ft and under) - Creek rods designed for casting under tree canopy. Short Rods (Less than 8ft) - Stillwater Rods from a Boat. Less fatiguing, capable of great distance, very accurate. Poor Roll Casting, poor Pick up at distance. Average Rods (9ft) - All around performance. Good fatiguing to length ratio. Good Roll Casting, good pick up at distance. Long Rods (10ft - single hand) - Stillwater Trout application for handling Long belly fly lines presenting smaller Dry flies and Nymphs. Long pick ups, long casting stroke to control long belly fly lines designed to be carried to distance. Very Long Rods (11ft and up) - Wade Fishing Large River with minimal back casting space. Specializing in Water Tension Casts (Spey Casts). Also very useful for wade fishing Lakes!
