Fly Line Tapers for Streamer Fishing
This video is all about Fly Line Tapers, and what you are looking for when selecting a Line for Streamer Fishing. The video covers Double Taper (DT) Fly lines and Weight Forward (WF) lines briefly to Segway into modern fly line tapers for Streamer Fishing. Streamer Fly Lines usually are heavily compressed into a 30ft head length (WF), which helps conserve momentum to overcome wind resistance flies. However some are dedicated to sight fishing at distance might extent the belly length out to 40ft or so to assist in carrying more line while false casting. The two Tapers in particular are opposites of one another within this Short Belly Taper Line Style - the Shooting Head and the Spey Taper. Shooting Heads feature a Heavy Front Belly, which places the line Mass closest to the Fly to maximize the conservation of momentum. When paired with a Short rear taper, these lines are maximized for distance casting and can handle the largest flies on the market. The downside is they tend to be splashy when landing and due to the short rear taper and heavy front belly, they are more difficult to control and through accurately, especially if you slip to much line while false casting. Spey Heads feature a Heavy Rear Belly, which places the Mass closest to the Rod Tip. These lines taper gradually down to a Short Front Taper allowing them to still dump energy into a leader and turn over a streamer. The lower profile Front Belly makes for a more delicate presentation and the Heavy Rear Belly being closest to the rod tip makes these lines incredibly accurate.
